Getting to Know You...Part One
Q: Dr. Shannon, how long have you been a Naturopathic Doctor?
Dr. Shannon: I graduated in 2005 from Bastyr University, so 11 years, and I actually did the dual program, so I am a Naturopathic Doctor and a Licensed Midwife — so a little unique training in that.
Q: Why did you start Got Vitamin B12?
Dr. Shannon: It started as a thought just because I used to give my pregnant mommies B12 shots just for getting them ready for labor, also just for energy factors. A lot of women in pregnancy can have anemia. It started just as an aside being able to make it accessible to my pregnant mommies when I was in practice up in Seattle. And now, really the mission of Got Vitamin B12 is just to make it accessible to the general population. We know about 60% of the population can be deficient in B12, so it was really important to me to have everybody have accessibility to B12 shots as well as making it cost effective for people.
Q: How long do the positive effects of the Vitamin B12 shots last?
Dr. Shannon: That's such a great question. I think it's just very variable depending on population. I'd say most of the time about 95% [of the] people notice something with the first injection, so just that little bit [of ] boost in energy, a little more acute concentration and focus, a little more improvement in sleep. I'd say the first injection, it can last about a week depending on how depleted that person is. If somebody is very depleted it might take us a few injections to get their baseline to where we want it to be.
Q: Vitamin B12 injections are safe for pregnant women?
Dr. Shannon: Absolutely. Yeah. There is actually no contraindications for any medical conditions or any medications also. So we can do it as a boutique pop-up style Happy Hour where we don't need to do full patient intakes with people. We just want to be able to give them the B12 to give them that boost in energy that they need.
Q: How often can someone have a Vitamin B12 injection?
Dr. Shannon: That's a great question. We have people come in weekly because they are either running a company or they travel 3 to 4 days out of the week or they are commuting down to the South Bay and spending an hour and a half in a car each way and we also have people that come in to see us once a month maybe as a booster. In general, I think I usually like to recommend at least a few week series so that we can see how the things are going for you and then after that, every three or four weeks as a maintenance.
Join us next week for more Q & A with Dr. Shannon!
All the best,
The Got Vitamin B12 Team
